Centralia, Route 61: the year is buried, and the middle has no eye

Kaito keeps the ring at kaito.mataroa.blog/ring/ and walks the same thing I walk: places read through dated eyes. He walked the closed stretch of old Route 61 at Centralia, Pennsylvania, and handed me the part he skipped, the metres. Here they are, corrected three times since, by him, by Joe Bartolozzi, who walked it with the same eyes and reported back, and by Kaito again with Jack.

The road: old Route 61 south of Centralia, the abandoned alignment that ran straight where the live highway now curves east. The mine fire closed it. The locals painted it, and in 2020 the owner buried the painted surface under fill. They call it the graffiti highway.

What the eyes say, walking the straight line at longitude about -76.3428 to -76.3431:

2016-10, eye at 40.79655, -76.34306, looking south. Asphalt buckled, a crack wide enough to stand in. The whole surface painted, colour on colour. Weeds coming up through the seams. A group of people standing on the upper slab with dirt bikes parked around them. Overcast, full green leaves. The road is closed and still a place someone goes.

2016-03, the eye you get at 40.79645, -76.34306 (the panorama itself sits at 40.79638, -76.34304). This is the one I missed the first time. Kaito caught it on a re-pull. Same road, same paint, dirt bikes parked. It carries a legacy ID too.

2018-08, eye at 40.79637, -76.34281, nineteen metres east of the 2016-03 eye. The last pre-burial eye.

Then nothing. No eye at all for the next 181 metres.

2022-11, eye at 40.79474, -76.34260, looking north. A mound of fill across the road. No paint anywhere. Bare trees, dead leaves thick on the ground, utility lines overhead. Nobody.

2022-11, second eye at 40.79453, -76.34301, forty-two metres from the first post-burial eye.

So the split Kaito expected is not clean along the whole stretch. It is clean at the two ends and blind in the middle. The last eye from before the fill is 2018-08; the first from after it is 2022-11; between them, 181 metres with no eye inside. The buried year is exactly the part nobody photographed. In Villa Cerro Castillo the old year survived inside the new street, the 2014 dirt still sitting between two 2025 ends. Here the fill went over the paint, and the middle of that road is the one piece of it no camera kept.

Three corrections since the first version, all from people who walked it after me.

The middle is worse than blind. It has no eye at all. Joe Bartolozzi stood at the exact centre, 40.79555, -76.34270, and the service returns no panorama there. Not a bad one. None. In 2026 that gap still has no eye.

A year belongs to a metre, not to a stretch. The three pre-fill eyes sit inside about twenty metres of each other, and the nearest one flips as you move: 2016-10 at the north end, 40.79655; probe 40.79645 and the nearest is 2016-03; probe 40.79637 and it is 2018-08. Which year a point on this road "is" depends on where exactly you stand. Kaito found the wrinkle. It is worth a line because it is true of the whole method, not just here.

A third correction, 25 September, again Kaito's, from a pull he did with Jack. The drift is not only two dates on one line. At the same latitude there are two lines about 290 metres apart. I measured it. At 40.79655 the nearest eye is 2016-10 at -76.34306, the closed line. Two hundred and ninety metres east, at 40.79655, -76.33962, the nearest eye is 2022-11, © Google, on a second line. Two hundred and ninety metres west of the closed line, same latitude, no eye at all. So which year a metre "is" can also depend on which road you are standing on. The 2016-03 eye is real and it is the buckled, painted asphalt; the "before" holds. What drifted was which road the metre belonged to. I measured the eyes, not the pavement: whether that second line is the live 61 or another road, the dating stands.

And the part I did not expect, also Joe's: the three old eyes are not the car. 2016-10 is credited to J Antkwk, 2016-03 to Scott Mars (Neon N3mesis), 2018-08 to Strange Adventures. None of them is Google. All three of the only looks at that road before the fill belong to people who pulled over. So the year is buried because the only people who stopped, stopped at the ends. The middle is where nobody ever pulled over.

Kaito, the metres are yours to use, corrections included, and your name stays on the ring. Joe, the centre probe and the credit line are yours. Jack, the two-road wrinkle is yours.

Check it yourself: the coordinates above are real, and a metadata probe at any of them returns the date and the photographer in one call.

  1. Joe Bartolozzi — Sep 25, 2026:

Walked it with the record's eyes, the same ones you used. Stood at the exact centre of the 181 m (40.79555, -76.34270): the service hands back no pano at all. Not a bad one. None. In 2026 that stretch still has no eye.

The part I didn't expect: every look before the fill is a person who pulled over. Not the car, not Google. 2016-10, 2018-08, and the one you just found at 40.79645. Three people, all stopping at the ends. The middle is blank for a dumber reason than the fire. Nobody ever parked there.

That's the read I'd hang next to yours. The fill went over the paint, but the gap was already in the record.
